Haruhi Fujioka is a first-year scholarship student attending Ouran Academy. Haruhi joins the Ouran Host Club after accidentally breaking an expensive antique vase. She now must act as a host to pay off her debt. Haruhi slowly integrates into the club and finds herself at home with all the other host members. The rest of the host members enjoy having Haruhi around and consider herself a valuable group member. They include her in their antics and would always rescue her if she is in trouble, such as when she needs protection from thunderstorms or gets unwanted attention from guys.
Haruhi is studious and apathetic. She can easily see people for who they are and is not easily deceived by their deceptions, especially when the other host club members try to tease or play tricks on her. She is also very caring towards her father and friends. Haruhi eventually gets closer to Tamaki Suoh and develops feelings for him. In addition, Haruhi does not care much about gender roles. She strongly believes that a person's character should be judged by personality rather than outward appearance and material wealth. Haruhi doesn’t put much effort into her appearance, as she dresses more like a boy than a young lady, much to the dismay of some of the host club members. Furthermore, gender-bending humor becomes one of the focal points of the entire series.
Tamaki Suoh is a second-year student and the co-founder and president of the Ouran Host Club. He is half-Japanese and half-French. Tamaki experiences discrimination from his grandmother, who separated him from his French mother. In the manga, Tamaki and his grandmother eventually strengthen their relationship, allowing Tamaki to see his mother.
Tamaki cares deeply about his fellow host club members. He sees his friends as family, claiming himself as the father figure. If one of his friends gets in trouble, he would always find a way to solve their problems, even if the solution was a ridiculous plan. He acts like a prince to the female students. He is flirtatious and charismatic, causing the female students to fall in love with him. However, Tamaki shows his genuine feelings towards Haruhi. He is always sweet and caring towards her. Haruhi playfully teases Tamaki, which causes him to blush and act shyly towards her.
Kyoya Ootori is a second-year student. He is also the co-founder and vice-president of the host club. Kyoya is best friends with Tamaki Suoh. Kyoya always keeps Tamaki subdued whenever Tamaki goes overboard with scheming and playfulness. He is the one who maintains the finances for the club, and he makes sure to organize and plan any events. Kyoya is analytical and calculating. He makes sure every decision and action benefits himself or his fellow friends. Kyoya feels more like a true leader than Tamaki, but he prefers to stay in the shadows rather than be in the spotlight.
Hikaru and Kaoru Hitachiin are twin brothers and best friends to each other. Many people mistake their identities, but Haruhi Fujioka can tell them apart, which surprises the twins. Haruhi is also the one who helps the twins become independent and teaches them to trust others. Both have a crush on Haruhi Fujioka; however, they put their feelings aside because they do not want to hurt one another.
The twins are mischievous as they enjoy playing tricks on others, especially on Tamaki — yet, they do have their differences. Kaoru is a bit more mature and is considerate of others. As for Hikaru, he tends to act immaturely. In the host club, they play the “forbidden brotherly love” trope. They act like two brothers in love with one another but cannot be together, which is a selling point to their customers.
Mitsukuni “Honey” Haninozuka is a third-year student at Ouran Academy. He has a small stature and acts childish, often mistaken for an elementary school child, even though he is one of the oldest host club members. Honey has a cute and innocent personality. He loves sweets and stuffed animals. He is also a talented martial artist, and he comes from a famous martial arts family. Honey is close with his cousin, Mori, who is also part of the host club.
Takashi “Mori” Morinozuka is a third-year student. He excels in kendo and martial arts. Mori can also be intimidating due to his tall stature and his stoic personality. Mori is Honey's cousin. Mori is very protective of his cousin, Honey, and this overprotectiveness extends to his fellow host club members. His family has served the Haninozuka family for generations until their families joined in marriage. He is the “strong, silent type” in the host club, and young female students swoon over his personality and his close-knit relationship with Honey.

Renge Houshakuji is the loud and outspoken self-proclaimed manager of the Ouran Host Club. She is savvy at media production and broadcasting and has a vast knowledge of dating sim games and shojo tropes. She uses those skills to make the host club members more marketable and appealing to their customers. She lived in France until she moved to Japan to attend Ouran Academy. She has a crush on Kyoya Ootori because he is close to her ideal type in her favorite dating sim game, the leading character, Ichigo Miyabi.
Umehito Nekozawa is the president of the Black Magic Club at Ouran Academy. He wears a hooded cloak and carries around a cat puppet named Belzeneff. Umehito tends to hide his face with his hooded cloak, but he has a handsome and princely appearance underneath the hooded cloak. Nekozawa has photophobia, which is the fear of light, and it leads him to collapse and have a feeling of death. However, with the help of the host club members, Nekozawa learned to tolerate being in light for the sake of his little sister, Kirimi.
Ritsu Kasanoda is the next successor of the yakuza group, Kasanoda. Kasanoda has red hair and an intimidating face, making him seem unfriendly and unapproachable to others. Yet, in actuality, Kasanoda is a kind-hearted person and wants to help others. He is one of the few students that knows about Haruhi being a girl. He falls in love with Haruhi, but Haruhi politely declines his feelings. Despite the rejection, Kasanoda continues to be friends with all the host club members.
Benio Amakusa is the president of the Zuka Club at St. Lobelia’s Girls Academy. The Zuka Club is an all-female musical theater group. She is known as “Benibara-sama” and “The Lady of the Crimson Rose.” Benio has a large fan base and is often seen flirting with her female fans. She is similar to Tamaki in that she is overdramatic and self-centered. Throughout the series, she tries to convince Haruhi to join their club and transfer to schools.
Chizuru Maihara is the vice president of the Zuka Club. Her nickname is “The Lady of the Lily.” She is the calmest member of the group, but she tends to join in on Benio’s antics even though it may not be the wisest decision. She also sees men as lower creatures beneath women.
Hinako Tsuwabuki is the youngest member of the Zuka Club. She is known as “The Lady of the Daisy.” She is very bubbly and intelligent.

Ryoji “Ranka” Fujioka is Haruhi Fujioka’s father. He works at a bar and crossdresses as a woman. He categorizes himself as bisexual, but he has never loved another woman besides Haruhi’s mother. Ranka has a close relationship with his daughter. He wants what is best for his daughter and tries to be a strong presence in Haruhi's life, even though she is self-reliant and doesn’t want to burden him with her troubles.
Kotoko Fujioka is Haruhi’s mother, who tragically passed away when Haruhi was five years old. Kotoko was an attorney and was Haruhi’s role model in life. Her mother cared deeply for Haruhi and was open-minded and accepting of Haruhi’s father’s bisexuality.
Yuzuru Suoh is Tamaki Suoh’s father, and he is the chairman of Ouran Academy. Yuzuru has similar characteristics to his son. He enjoys teasing Tamaki, he acts playful toward his son and his son's friends, and he schemes up some ridiculous plans. Yuzuru rebels against his mother’s wishes. He gets into a relationship with Tamaki’s mother, Anne-Sophie de Grantaine, much to the dismay of his mother.
Shizue Suoh is Tamaki’s grandmother and Yuzuru’s mother. She is also the matriarch and head of the Suoh family. Shizue is the series' main antagonist. She is cold-hearted and cruel towards Tamaki, and she always tries to control Tamaki’s life by separating him from his mother and friends, and by forcing him into an arranged marriage.
You'll fall for the Ouran Host Club: Tamaki's truly romantic. Kaoru and Hikaru display brotherly love, Kyoya's brainy, Honey's innocent, and Mori's manly. Oh, and don't forget Haruhi. He knows what girls want, because he's a girl too.
