1 NEW STAR WARS MOVIE WILL FINALLY SOLVE THE PREQUELS' LAST ANAKIN MYSTERY

An upcoming Star Wars movie can finally solve one remaining prequel-era mystery. The Star Wars prequel trilogy introduced the concept of the Chosen One, a prophecy that stated that one person was destined to bring balance to the Force. After meeting Anakin Skywalker on Tatooine in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, Qui-Gon Jinn believed Anakin to be the Chosen One, though why exactly he thought that to be true was never fully explained. Of course, Anakin was unusually strong with the Force, and the circumstances of his birth were questionable, at best, but the prequels never included the actual text of the prophecy, leaving everything concerning Anakin’s role open to interpretation.

That all changed when Claudia Gray’s novel Master & Apprentice was published. Master & Apprentice tells the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon’s time on the planet Pijal. Qui-Gon’s interest in prophecies is examined in great detail, but only one of those concerns the Chosen One. The novel reveals the exact text of the prophecy: “A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored.” This not only makes Qui-Gon’s conviction of Anakin being the Chosen One much more understandable, but the novel also reveals the root of the prophecy – a source that could be further explored in James Mangold’s upcoming Dawn of the Jedi movie.

The Chosen One Prophecy Appears To Predate The Jedi

Qui-Gon studied the Chosen One prophecy through a holocron in the Jedi Archives. Whenever the Master & Apprentice novel references Qui-Gon’s interest in the prophecies, it is said that the source of this prophecy, and a few others, were the ancient mystics. According to Rael Aveross, a fellow Jedi, the mystics had visions in trances that told them of the future, akin to the Force visions the Jedi have been known to have. If Qui-Gon refers to the ones who wrote the prophecies as ancient mystics, and not Jedi, then it can be surmised that the prophecies themselves pre-date the Jedi religion. Perhaps these ancient mystics inspired the first Jedi and the Jedi religion, but they were clearly not part of it themselves.

Star Wars Is Finally Telling The Story Of The First Jedi

At Star Wars Celebration 2023, it was announced that James Mangold would be directing a movie concerning the Dawn of the Jedi. The movie is set to take place 25,000 years before the events of The Phantom Menace and will likely tell the story of the first Jedi – who they were, and how they ended up creating the earliest iteration of the Jedi Order. But the first Jedi must have learned about the Force from someone; how to sense it, use it, and interpret its power and visions. The first Jedi in Mangold’s film may have learned what they know from the ancient mystics that wrote the Chosen One prophecy, explaining their inclusion in the Jedi Archives.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has even teased that the film will go back in time further than just the first Jedi and the creation of the Order. Perhaps it will detail the birth of the Force or, at the very least, the person that discovered its all-encompassing energy first. Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi movie is rife with potential and can answer many questions concerning the lore of the Force in Star Wars and the history of the Jedi Order.

This Is Star Wars' Best Chance To Explore The Chosen One Prophecy

The Dawn of the Jedi movie is the perfect vehicle with which to explore the Chosen One prophecy and, specifically, the concept of balance. The Jedi Order as the audience encounters it in The Phantom Menace is already vastly different from the one that exists in the High Republic Era. Interpretations and understanding change with time; 25,000 years can alter the meaning of something solely due to the environment and world those reading it currently inhabit. Perhaps balance meant something entirely different to the ancient mystics and the first Jedi who recorded their prophecies for posterity – the Dawn of the Jedi movie can explore those discrepancies and how Qui-Gon’s time with the Jedi influenced his interpretation of the prophetic text.

Mangold has described his Star Wars film as a “Ten Commandments”-esque movie. As such, it will likely be a religious epic that will detail the creation of the Jedi Order. Given the religious undertones and parallels of the Chosen One trope, such as Anakin's rebirth as Vader and his final sacrifice to save his loved one, the Dawn of the Jedi movie might be the best vehicle through which to understand the importance of the prophecy that changed the course of Anakin Skywalker’s life and the Star Wars galaxy forever.
