SEOUL, April 22 (Yonhap) -- The age standard for viewing R-rated films will be raised from 18 to 19 in universal age standard starting next month, state-run council said on the 22nd.

According to the Korea Media Rating Board (KMRB), the revised Promotion of Movie and Video Act, enacted in October last year, will come into effect on May 1.

Under the previous law, individuals under the age of 18, including high school students, were considered minors. However, the amended law now defines minors as those under 19, aligning with the concept of minors under the Youth Protection Act.

In preparation for the enforcement of the revised law, the KMRB will update the 'restricted for youth' rating labels and warning messages. They will also strengthen cooperation with multiplex theaters, including the three major chains, and over-the-top (OTT) video streaming services, to minimize confusion.
