'CONTROLLED CHAOS': WINSTON DUKE ON WHAT FALL GUY GETS RIGHT ABOUT MASSIVE BLOCKBUSTER SETS

The Fall Guy is unique in that it's a summer blockbuster that takes place on the set of a fictional big-budgeted blockbuster. Actor Winston Duke, who has starred in his fair share of blockbuster movies, recently shared what The Fall Guy gets right about being one small part of a massive project.

Despite focusing on a stuntman (Ryan Gosling) getting caught up in a conspiracy surrounding the missing lead actor (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) of the movie, Metalstorm, Duke, as well as his co-star Stephanie Hsu, revealed during their interview with CBR's Kevin Polowy that some of The Fall Guy's wilder moments are more realistic than audiences might expect. Hsu pointed out that while "it seems extreme some of the things" that Hannah Waddingham's character, Metalstorm producer Gail Meyer, does in The Fall Guy "to make sure that the film still continues to be on track, but I would say that people are pulling stops like that all the time."

Winston agreed with Hsu, noting that a blockbuster set can get very "chaotic" due to "how many moving pieces" there are. He explained how big-budget films can have upwards of 300 people on set sometimes between extras, stunts, principal actors, and the production team. "It's like a tiny city. Everyone's moving to try and make this thing work, but everyone has their own personality," he shared. He added that The Fall Guy shows this "kind of controlled chaos situation that I felt is reflective of really big budget movies."

What Is The Fall Guy About?

Directed by David Leitch, The Fall Guy is an action comedy film loosely based on the 1980s television series of the same name about stunt performers moonlighting as bounty hunters. In the updated reimagining, Gosling stars as Colt Seavers, a stuntman working on his ex-girlfriend's (Emily Blunt) directorial debut action film, Metalstorm, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film's missing lead actor, Tom Ryder (Taylor-Johnson). The movie has earned largely positive reviews from critics since its premiere at SXSW 2024 and is on track to open with upwards of $40 million at the domestic box office this weekend.

Winston Duke Wants to Be the DCU's Batman

As mentioned, Duke is no stranger to starring in blockbuster movies, having previously appeared as M'Baku in four Marvel superhero movies — Black Panther (2018), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). The actor hasn't just played in the Marvel sandbox though, he's also done work for DC, voicing Bruce Wayne/Batman in the scripted Spotify podcast, Batman Unburied (2022). Now, Duke is hoping to get a crack at playing the iconic superhero in live-action, revealing during a recent interview that he "would love" to play the character for James Gunn's DC Universe. Batman is expected to make his DCU debut in the upcoming movie, The Brave and the Bold, which will be directed by Andy Muschietti.

The Fall Guy is currently playing in theaters.
