Crunchyroll has confirmed the North American release date of the Haikyu movie -- Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle -- in its first official English-subtitled teaser trailer reveal.
As previously reported, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle will be released in the United States on May 31, 2024, receiving its first official English teaser trailer today on April 24. The trailer teases the fated showdown between Kenma and Haikyu!! protagonist Shoyo Hinata, ending with the latter's challenge of "A match where there's no rematch!" Released in Japan on Feb. 16, 2024, Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle has already seen massive box office success domestically, grossing over $63 million as of April 24. More than 5% of the Japanese population or 6.1 million people have already seen the film. Overseas income's increasing importance to the anime industry continues to be on display, with Haikyu's international rollout occurring just a few months after its Japan release. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment have similarly confirmed the rapid U.S. distribution of the new Blue Lock film.
The Haikyu!! movie joins fellow anime blockbuster and IG Port-production Spy x Family Code: White as one of the most highly anticipated theatrical anime titles this year. Released last week, Spy x Family opened to a respectable $4.8 million in the U.S. More than that, Spy x Family Code: White currently stands as one of the most highly-rated anime movies ever on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 96% critics score and 98% audience score. Reviews say that the film makes for a wonderful standalone film while adding to the Forger family dynamic that fans know and love.
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment are distributing Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle in the U.S., describing it: "Shoyo Hinata joins Karasuno High’s volleyball club to be like his idol, a former Karasuno player known as the “Little Giant.” But, Hinata soon finds that he must team up with his middle school nemesis, Tobio Kageyama. Their clashing styles turn into a surprising weapon, but can they beat their rival Nekoma High in the highly anticipated “Dumpster Battle,” the long-awaited ultimate showdown between two opposing underdog teams?" Susumu Mitsunaka served as both director and screenplay writer, adapting Haruichi Furudate's original manga. The film's runtime is 85 minutes.
