A new trailer has dropped for the upcoming sequel Despicable Me 4. Also released is a new poster that further teases the arrival of the super-powered Mega Minions.
This marks the first Despicable Me movie to be released in seven years, though it follows the release of the 2022 prequel, Minions: The Rise of Gru. That film earned nearly $1 billion worldwide to further establish the movie series as the biggest global animated franchise in history. A new era begins in Despicable Me 4 with the arrival of the Mega Minions. The new trailer and poster can be viewed below.
The synopsis for Despicable Me 4 reads, "Gru (Oscar nominee Steve Carrell) and Lucy (Oscar nominee Kristen Wiig) and their girls —Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Madison Polan) — welcome a new member to the Gru family, Gru Jr., who is intent on tormenting his dad. Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Emmy winner Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Emmy nominee Sofia Vergara), and the family is forced to go on the run."
The sequel also features new characters voiced by Joey King (Bullet Train), Stephen Colbert (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), and Chloe Fineman (Saturday Night Live). Returning from the previous installments are Pierre Coffin as the voice of the Minions and Steve Coogan as Silas Ramsbottom.
Co-creator of the Minions, Chris Renaud (The Secret Life of Pets), directed Despicable Me 4. It is written by the Emmy-winning creator of The White Lotus, Mike White, alongside the veteran writer of every Despicable Me film, Ken Daurio. The film is produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri alongside Brett Hoffman (The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru). Patrick Delage (Sing 2, The Secret Life of Pets 2) co-directed.
"It's a continuation of the story," voice actor Steve Carell previously told Digital Spy about where the story goes next in Despicable Me 4. "Gru and Lucy [Kristen Wiig] are married; they're a family at this point. It's the next step in their world with the Anti-Villain League and how their kids are included in the whole process. It's the most logical next step in the continuation of their story as a family together."
Despicable Me 4 premieres in movie theaters on July 3, 2024.
