SEARCHING 2 CAN STILL HAPPEN (DESPITE MISSING)

Searching could still get a sequel even though Missing exists. The 2018 film followed David Kim's search for his teenage daughter Margot Kim. In 2023, the spiritual sequel Missing was released with enough Easter eggs to connect the movies and prove they exist in the same universe. This time June Allen was searching for her mother, Grace Allen, putting the child at the helm of the investigation. Both movies had shocking twists at the end with satisfying endings that saw the main characters safely reunite, later ending up on a fake Netflix reenactment series called Unfiction.

The films were produced by Aneesh Chaganty and Sev Ohanian and were also connected to the 2020 film Run. The Sarah Paulson-led thriller exists in the same universe as Searching and Missing but has a much different format and plot. Unlike the latter films, Run doesn't feature a character searching for their relative and isn't told through the use of technology. However, Easter eggs, like the use of Hannah, the stock model, connect it to both Searching and Missing. So while Missing may feel like a sequel to Searching, it's not, and Searching could still get a second film without contradicting the events in Missing.

Missing Isn't A Real Searching Sequel

Missing isn't actually a sequel to Searching because it tells an entirely different story. While it shares many similarities with Searching, including similar plots, the use of technology, and even sharing news stories and characters, it doesn't continue the story that began in Searching.

If anything, Missing feels more like a spinoff than a sequel. David briefly appears at the beginning of Missing in the Unfiction episode, but his story is irrelevant to June and Grace's story in Missing. While it's fun for fans to find the Searching Easter eggs in Missing, the 2023 movie is a standalone film, and viewers don't have to have seen Searching to follow the Missing plot.

Why Searching 2 Shouldn't Happen (Even Though It Could)

Searching 2 is unnecessary, even if it is possible. There isn't any story left to tell for David and his daughter Margot. Unless Margot has a perpetual stalker, it's unlikely she would go missing again, and flipping the story so David disappears would be repetitive because Missing already told the story of a daughter searching for her parent. It would also feel redundant diving back into the Kim's search for a family member. The Searching Easter egg, where David appears in Unfiction was enough, and a sequel is not needed.
