X-MEN'S COLOSSUS MAY FINALLY BE FREE OF HIS DARK INFLUENCE

Warning: Spoilers ahead for X-Force #40Since the X-Men began their new lives on the all-mutant island nation of Krakoa, few have had it worse off than Colossus. Following his death and subsequent resurrection, Colossus has unknowingly been a victim of mental manipulation by his estranged brother Mikhail and his ally known as Chronicler. However, a time-traveling mission with Colossus's new X-Force team breaks him free of Mikhail and Chronicler's control, giving him temporary freedom and hinting at what's to come.

In X-Force #40, by Benjamin Percy, Paul Davidson, and Robert Gill, a time-traveling "old man" version of Quentin Quire shocks the team by arriving from the future and requesting the team's help in cleaning up what he refers to as a "cataclysmic mess." Colossus has recently joined X-Force and follows the team on their quest to help old man Omega repair the corrupted future brought on by Beast and his own dark ambition. After arriving in the future, the team is investigating their new surroundings when Colossus collapses out of his usual metal form. By describing his experience as feeling as though he "just woke up after sleeping for a hundred years," readers can pick up on something deeper happening, and Percy confirms that with the inclusion of a page within the issue of correspondence between Mikhail and Chronicler where it's stated that their connection to Colossus was severed when X-Force traveled through time. That freedom may not be permanent, but as one of the most significant plot points of the Krakoan era, X-Force #40 could be hinting toward a final payoff for what Mikhail and Chronicler intend to do with their influence over Colossus and the X-Men.

Colossus' X-Men Betrayal Arc Is Coming To Its Long-Awaited Conclusion

Starting out as a consistent side character on Krakoa following the soft relaunch of the X-Men franchise in 2019's House of X/Powers of X event by Jonathan Hickman and Pepe Larraz, Colossus has emerged as one of the island's most important mutants. As an elected member of the Quiet Council and recent X-Force recruit, Colossus is among the most influential mutants in X-Men comics. That makes the fact that Colossus has secretly been mind controlled by Mikhail and Chronicler even more disturbing, giving the two antagonists an almost unprecedented level of access from one of the island's most powerful citizens.

As the upcoming "Fall of X" era approaches, the future of Krakoa and the X-Men isn't entirely clear to readers just yet. While Marvel has been tight-lipped about exactly what's ahead for mutants and their allies, it's fair to assume that Colossus and how he's been used by Mikhail and Chronicler could have something to do with the dreaded Fall of X. As a key player on both the Quiet Council and X-Force, the potential ramifications of having Colossus compromised without the knowledge of himself or anyone around him gives Mikhail and Chronicler a dangerous advantage that could have devastating consequences if it goes on unnoticed for much longer in a time when the X-Men and Krakoa are already more vulnerable than they've been in years.

However, the temporary freedom Colossus got during this time travel could be the hint he needed to understand his predicament and take measures before he returns to his own time. As one of Krakoa's most influential mutants in the modern era, whatever is next for Colossus is sure to have a major impact on all mutants and on the future of the X-Men.
