CANCELED GREEN LANTERN SERIES ACTOR LAMENTS LOSS OF GUY GARDNER ROLE

Finn Wittrock was cast to play Guy Gardner in the HBO series Green Lantern, but with the executive changes, the project was scrapped. Despite that, Wittrock meticulously studied the character and found himself turned into a massive Guy Gardner fan.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Wittrock revealed how he felt about Green Lantern’s cancelation in favor of the Gunn/Safran show Lanterns. "I had like 20 Green Lantern comics sitting in my closet,” explained the American Horror Story actor. “I was starting to read the comics, my five-year-old son would find the comics and be like 'Dad, what's this?' And I was like, 'Research from a project that never was.’” Though the actor clearly laments the loss of the project, his research engendered a fondness for Green Lantern and his story.

"But yeah, it gave me a great education, into Green Lantern already. And now, I'm kind of hooked on to the story," Wittrock explained. "So, it was definitely, I won't say it didn't sting to find out the news that it wasn't happening. But, I think it was nice because I got to realize what I would need to do to prepare for a role like that. So, hopefully, some other comic book role will, the one that's supposed to be, will come my way. And then at least, like, have some kind of heads up about how to enter that world."

Wittrock was slated to play Guy Gardner and Jeremy Irvine was cast to play Alan Scott, Earth’s first Green Lantern, in the HBO series. They would be two of the several versions of the Emerald Knight in the series –with Simon Baz, Jessica Cruz, Kilowog, and Sinestro rounding out the corps. After some floundering in production purgatory, the project was eventually dropped, but not the character. James Gunn and Peter Safran, as new co-CEOs of DC Studios, were set on bringing the character into the fold in one way or another. They opted for a more grounded approach in the upcoming series Lanterns.

James Gunn is getting DC fans talking with a vague post for Green Lantern on social media.

Ryan Reynolds’ hapless portrayal of Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern –one of the most infamous superhero projects of all time– cast a doubt on whether the iconic character could be adapted into live-action. However, Gunn and Safran are confident that their approach, part of the larger Gods and Monsters chapter of the new DCU, will succeed. "[Lanterns stars] two of our favorite Green Lanterns—Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It’s going to be with HBO Max," explained Safran. "It is more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery." Gunn added, "[Lanterns] leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on 'Precinct Earth'."

Nathan Fillion Will Play Guy Gardner

The latest actor to take on the mantle of Green Lantern is Nathan Fillion –who has already voiced the character in several animated projects like Green Lantern: Emerald Knights and Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox. The actor, who will be playing Guy Gardner, has spoken openly about his love for the character, saying that what makes him most interesting are his quirks and flaws. Fillion is rumored to appear in the upcoming Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy) film.

Lanterns will likely be released right after Superman which is slated for July 11, 2025.
