"HE'S HIS OWN PERSON": MILES MORALES ACTOR EXPLAINS HIS CREED IN SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE

Shameik Moore explains how Miles Morales sets himself apart from the other heroes in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. In Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, Miles Morales found the hero within himself and stepped into the role of Spider-Man on his Earth after the death of Peter Parker. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will see Miles Morales meet even more Spider-heroes, but he will have to decide his path as a hero when he faces conflict with this new group.

Screen Rant spoke with Moore about Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse. He discussed Miles Morales finding his own path as a hero and broke down Miles' thought process when facing the other Spider-heroes, explaining what sets him apart. Check out Moore's full quote and interview below:

Shameik Moore: What separates him is his fingerprint. He's his own person. It separates all of them. But I think that's exactly, that's the story, "How do I want to wear this mask? This doesn't feel right. This does. No matter what you say to me, I get what you're saying about saving this and the bigger stakes make sense, I understand. But you can't tell me that you know this for sure. I'm going to go and do what I know is right." That's when he knows that he's wearing his mask completely at that point. We all face that in some way, shape, form, or fashion in our lifetimes as humans.

How Into The Spider-Verse Lays The Groundwork For Miles Morales' Individuality In Across The Spider-Verse

Miles Morales does not have the same journey as the other heroes in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. While they have always been alone as Spider-Man or Spider-Woman, he had a team supporting him. Miles Morales took the leap of faith to become Spider-Man only after learning from Peter B. Parker, Gwen Stacy, and even the example of his Earth's Peter Parker. Miles Morales isn't motivated by loss in the same way as the other Spider-Heroes, either.

While he did lose his uncle, there are much more complicated feelings surrounding this grief because he wasn't an innocent bystander; instead, Miles' uncle was one of Kingpin's villainous henchmen, The Prowler. These core differences—being the second Spider-Man of his Earth, learning from others before donning the mask, and being motivated by his uncle in a different way—make him unique in the Spider-Verse.

In Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, Miles Morales stands out among the other Spider-Men across the multiverse, even choosing to take a path that puts him in conflict with the group of Spider-Men and Spider-Women who have taken it upon themselves to protect the multiverse. Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sets this up by having Miles take a non-traditional path to become the web-slinging hero. His idea of what it means to be Spider-Man isn't the same as others; his experience isn't steeped in tragedy and mistakes of his own making, but in support, some loss, and the example of others.
