The Last of Us debuted with very high viewership on Max, setting a new record at the time for the streaming platform. More than a year later, the show has lost its top spot, dethroned by the new docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.
Per Variety, Quiet on Set debuted at No. 3 on Nielsen's weekly streaming rankings, earning nearly 1.3 billion minutes viewed during the March 18-24 window. This includes all four episodes, given that the first two premiered on March 17 while the second two launched the next day. This is a new record for the best one-week performance for a Max title, surpassing the record set by The Last of Us in early 2023 for 1.2 billion minutes. Notably, both shows had also aired on television, with Quiet on Set airing on ID and The Last of Us airing on HBO.
As for what came above Quiet on Set, the top spot for the week went to Netflix's sci-fi series 3 Body Problem. The show, which was co-created by the Game of Thrones TV series creators, pulled in almost 1.4 billion minutes in four days' time. That was followed by Prime Video's Road House remake at No. 2 with just above 1.3 billion minutes. Rounding out the top five with spots below Quiet on Set were Bluey for Disney+ at 1.04 billion minutes and Homicide: New York for Netflix at 1.03 billion minutes.
Maybe The Last of Us will be able to reclaim the record when it returns with its anticipated second season. Season 2 is presently in development and is reportedly on track to premiere around March or April in 2025. Filming on the second season is expected to be wrapped by August of this year.
The Last of Us has also garnered some great acclaim with its first season. Just recently, it earned another big win at the Writers Guild of America Awards for the Television and New Media Award, overcoming other popular shows like Poker Face, The Diplomat, Jury Duty, and Shrinking. It was also nominated for the Drama Series category, which was won by another HBO series, Succession.
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey lead the cast of The Last of Us. Season 2 will bring in Kaitlyn Dever (Abby), Young Mazino (Jesse), Isabela Merced (Dina), Danny Ramirez (Manny), Tati Gabrielle (Nora), Ariela Barer (Mel), Spencer Lord (Owen), and Catherine O'Hara in a mystery role.
